Political Violence Against Opposition Campaigns Must Stop
I am deeply concerned by reports and footage of violence disrupting opposition political activities. Every Nigerian, regardless of party, ethnicity or region, has the constitutional right to campaign, vote and participate freely in elections. Nigeria's democratic history has had serious flaws, including disputed elections, but political competition must not be replaced with intimidation, harassment or attacks. Security agencies must act promptly against anyone who threatens voters or disrupts lawful rallies. If violence and ethnic profiling are allowed to become normal political tools, other groups may retaliate and further endanger the country. Democracy can only survive when leaders, parties and institutions protect equal political rights for all Nigerians.
