US Lawmaker Proposes Ban on Lobbying for Nigeria Over Religious Freedom Concerns
US Representative Barry Moore has introduced a bill that would prohibit American firms from accepting payment to lobby for the Nigerian government while Nigeria remains designated a Country of Particular Concern. The proposed legislation, H.R. 10939, would sanction firms that lobby for Nigeria during the designation. Moore alleged that the Nigerian government has spent heavily on lobbyists while failing to stop killings and religious persecution. The bill has been referred to the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs. It is only a proposed law and has not been passed. Nigeria was reportedly redesignated as a Country of Particular Concern in 2025 over alleged religious-freedom violations.
