Nigeria’s foreign ministry announced this week that it has completed the evacuation of 1,490 citizens from South Africa. The airlift ran from June 10 to July 15 after anti-immigrant groups demanded undocumented foreigners leave by June 30. Other African nations, including Malawi, Zimbabwe and Uganda, also repatriated thousands of nationals as violent protests targeted migrants accused of taking jobs and resources. South African authorities face criticism for failing to curb attacks that have left shops owned by immigrants looted and at least four foreign nationals dead. While some Nigerian lawmakers urged a firmer response, the government said it will continue constructive diplomatic engagement with South Africa. The statement reiterated that all forms of xenophobia and racial intolerance are unacceptable.
