Sanwo-Olu Reportedly Replaces LAWMA MD as Lagos Waste Complaints Persist
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reportedly appointed Dr Hassan Sanuth as the new managing director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority following persistent complaints about refuse piling up across the state. State authorities had not officially confirmed the appointment or reports that the incumbent, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, was asked to resign. The governor recently declared an emergency on waste management after visiting the Olusosun Dumpsite. He cited poor performance by some waste contractors, while ongoing compaction work at Olusosun and Solous 3 is expected to increase the capacity for daily waste disposal. Residents in areas including Mushin, Egbeda, Surulere, Ajegunle, Ikorodu, Ojo, Obalende, Apapa and Mile 2 have continued to report heaps of refuse on roads and in drainage channels. Gbadegesin said some affected routes had been cleared and that temporary collection arrangements were in place in several communities. Sanuth previously served as Director of Sanitation Services in the Lagos environment ministry. He has over 23 years of public-sector experience in environmental management and holds a doctorate in Environmental Microbiology.
