INEC Affirms David Mark Faction, Recognises Atiku and 471 ADC Candidates
The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed it will only accept candidate lists submitted by the Senator David Mark-led African Democratic Congress leadership. This follows a Supreme Court ruling affirming Mark’s control, which granted his faction access to INEC’s nomination portal. INEC Commissioner Mohammed Haruna said the Mark group has nominated 471 candidates for the 2027 elections, including two presidential hopefuls, 109 senatorial candidates and 360 for the House of Representatives. He added that the rival faction lacks any legal basis to submit names. The ADC has asked security agencies to probe claims by its own factional leader, Nafiu Bala Gombe, who allegedly uploaded candidates to the portal without permission. The party denies Bala ever had access codes and calls his claims “false and misleading.” INEC will review the recent Court of Appeal decision on ADC state congresses before issuing a fresh position on that matter. The appellate ruling concerns only state committees and does not affect direct primaries or candidate nominations.
