Cosmas Maduka’s Allegation Raises a Bigger Question About Nigeria’s Culture of Inflated Contracts
Coscharis Group founder Cosmas Maduka has alleged that a former Plateau State governor sought to have vehicles worth about ₦40 million invoiced at ₦80 million. The allegation is serious and should be independently verified, while the former governor should be given a fair opportunity to respond. The wider issue is that contract inflation is not limited to government. Similar practices can occur in private businesses, procurement units, construction projects, schools, hospitals, NGOs and community organisations. When inflated invoices, kickbacks and fake expenses become normal, the real cost is passed to taxpayers, customers, shareholders and the wider economy. Nigeria needs stronger systems for independent price checks, transparent procurement records, clear separation of approval and payment roles, and real consequences for fraud. Investigating public officials matters, but lasting change will also require Nigerians to reject dishonest enrichment wherever it happens.
