10-Year-Old and Two Women Die in Overcrowded English Channel Boat Crossing
A 10-year-old child and two women in their 30s have died after an overcrowded inflatable boat carrying 105 people ran into trouble while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to the United Kingdom. French maritime authorities launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call off the northern French coast. Everyone aboard was rescued and taken to Calais, but the three victims were later declared dead. Nine other passengers received medical treatment. Officials said initial findings suggest the victims may have been crushed inside the packed boat rather than drowned. French authorities have opened an investigation into the tragedy and the suspected migrant-smuggling operation behind the crossing.
