Atiku’s Subsidy Promise and the Response From Tinubu’s Supporters

Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate, has reportedly promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected in 2027. I believe this pledge has unsettled President Bola Tinubu and many APC supporters, who have urged Nigerians not to be persuaded by it. In my view, Atiku is using a familiar election strategy. Ahead of the 2015 election, the APC made several ambitious promises, including a lower fuel price and a much stronger naira. I think Atiku understands that many voters are drawn to promises of immediate economic relief, even when such promises may be difficult to achieve. Rather than dismissing his pledge, Tinubu’s supporters should offer Nigerians clearer and more realistic alternatives.
