Educators Demand Nationwide Push for Nigeria’s 1-9-3-4 Education Reform
The Association of Early Childhood and Basic Education Instructors in Nigeria has called for a stronger public campaign on the country’s 1-9-3-4 education structure. It urged authorities, school owners, and parents to align fully with the approved policy framework. The 1-9-3-4 system adopted in 2013 includes one year of early childhood care, nine years of uninterrupted basic education, three years of senior secondary school, and four years of university. The association warned that many schools still use common entrance exams and primary leaving certificates, creating extra costs for families. It asked the Federal Ministry of Education and state agencies to intensify awareness, enforce the policy, and monitor schools to prevent exploitative fees. Parents and employers were advised to rely on the Basic Education Certificate Examination and senior school certificates for transitions instead of outdated practices.
