Addressing them requires stronger investment in education, research, healthcare, innovation and skilled professionals. COVID-19 and Ebola showed how heavily many African countries rely on external support for vaccines, medicines and medical technology. Climate-related disasters and insecurity also demand capable institutions, scientists and well-equipped security agencies. Africa needs to build greater capacity to meet these challenges independently. If richer countries become focused on their own crises, African nations may be left with limited support to address urgent needs.
