Will Hamzat Cut Lagos Bus Fares? What His Proposal Actually Says
Lagos bus fares rose by 13 per cent in March 2026, prompting commuters to ask whether they could come down. Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat has discussed using private bus operators and government subsidies to make public transport more affordable, but he has not announced a confirmed fare cut or set out how much passengers would save. In an August 2026 interview, Hamzat said private operators could help bring buses into service more quickly as vehicle costs rise. He suggested that government support could subsidise fares. The details—including which routes would qualify, how the subsidy would be funded and what passengers would pay—remain unspecified. His manifesto, The Lagos Promise (Ìlérí Èkó), proposes expanding and reforming the BRT and bus network, building terminals across IBILE and connecting bus, rail and ferry services through one transport card. That integration is not a promise of one flat fare across all services. The manifesto does not publish a new fare schedule, fare cap or percentage reduction. Any change in what commuters pay would depend on the policy’s design and implementation.
