Malami Denies Corruption in $200m Mambilla Settlement as ICC Faults Deal

Former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami has defended his role in the proposed $200 million settlement between the Federal Government and Sunrise Power over the Mambilla Hydropower Project. He said his actions were taken in Nigeria’s interest and not for personal financial gain. An International Chamber of Commerce tribunal held that the settlement agreement and a later addendum were tainted by corruption and could not be enforced. The tribunal said the terms could have exposed Nigeria to liabilities of up to $400 million. Malami said no evidence was presented showing that he received money or any benefit from Sunrise Power or its promoter, Leno Adesanya. He also noted that the Federal Government never paid the $200 million settlement and said he would issue a fuller response after reviewing the tribunal’s award and records.
