A South African court has sentenced 49-year-old Lucas Kgosi Mmakgathi to 25 years’ direct imprisonment for killing his two-year-old son in Siga Village in May 2024. The court heard that Mmakgathi took the child after telling the boy’s mother he would buy him toys in Rustenburg. Instead, he took the child to a nearby bush and strangled him with a shoelace. The incident followed an argument between the parents. Mmakgathi, who had been held without bail since May 2024, was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. Police in North West said the sentence delivers justice to the family and sends a strong warning against violence toward children.
