Many Nigerians questioned how local fashion pieces can cost hundreds of thousands, or even millions, when the minimum wage is ₦70,000 per month. The high prices are often linked to the cost of production. Many designers rely on imported fabrics because local textile manufacturing cannot meet demand. Foreign exchange volatility, customs duties, shipping costs and logistics make these materials more expensive. Detailed beadwork, embroidery and other hand-finished elements also require skilled labour. Designers must additionally cover electricity, alternative power, delivery and other infrastructure costs. While some consumers believe certain brands overprice their products, industry players argue that reducing production costs will require stronger local textile production, reliable power and better infrastructure.
