Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Death of Girlfriend’s 20-Month-Old Daughter
In July 2024, 25-year-old Jesse Sartin rushed his girlfriend’s daughter, Caroline Boggs, to hospital after claiming the toddler fell from an ottoman when a family dog knocked her over. Doctors discovered severe brain swelling and a hematoma. They said her injuries were inconsistent with a simple fall and pointed to shaking. Caroline underwent surgery but died a week later. Sartin later admitted he had shaken the child amid rising tensions over money after losing his job. Prosecutors noted this was not the first time he’d harmed Caroline. At sentencing, the judge called the loss “devastating and preventable.” Sartin received a 35-year prison term and, upon release, will face five years of probation during which he cannot contact children.
