DisCos Lose ₦129bn as Electricity Distribution Losses Hit 36.23% in Q2
Nigeria’s 11 electricity distribution companies recorded aggregate technical, commercial and collection losses of 36.23% in the second quarter of 2026. This was well above NERC’s 16.92% target and was linked to an estimated ₦129.07 billion revenue loss. The result was slightly better than the 37.44% loss recorded in the first quarter, but every DisCo missed its reduction target. Kaduna DisCo performed worst, recording losses of 67.70%, while Kano and Jos also posted high loss levels. NERC data shows that 7.74 million of Nigeria’s 12.59 million active electricity customers had meters by the end of June, leaving more than 4.8 million unmetered. Better metering, accurate billing, stronger collections and transparent reporting will be crucial to improving power supply and maintaining distribution infrastructure.
