Edo IRS Boss: Tax Evaders Have No Moral Right to Demand Accountability

Edo State Internal Revenue Service Chairman John Odior says citizens who evade taxes cannot credibly demand accountability from government. He argued that public services, infrastructure and workers’ salaries depend on tax revenue. Odior said some people prioritise tithes and gifts to religious leaders over their tax obligations. While stressing that he does not oppose religious giving, he urged residents to treat tax payment as an important civic duty. He added that churches, humanitarian NGOs and people earning below the national minimum wage have exemptions under the law. However, pastors and other religious leaders are expected to pay personal income tax on their salaries, while churches must file annual tax returns. The EIRS chairman said the agency has introduced digital options to make tax payment and clearance easier for Edo residents.
