Kanu’s Lawyer Alleges Prosecutorial Overkill in Biafra Case
Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, says Kanu was subjected to “prosecutorial overkill” by the Nigerian government. Ejimakor argued that Kanu’s case was fundamentally about his agitation for a separate Biafran state, rather than the terrorism and treason allegations brought against him. He also alleged that the judicial process was improperly influenced. Kanu was first arrested in 2015 over activities linked to Radio Biafra and treasonable-felony allegations. After being granted bail in 2017 and later re-arrested in 2021 following his return from Kenya, he faced further proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Federal Government has maintained that Kanu’s prosecution concerns alleged offences against the state and national security. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2025.
