Ben Murray-Bruce Urges States to Cap Transport Fares Instead of Restoring Fuel Subsidy
I believe restoring petrol subsidy would repeat a failed system that enriched smugglers and connected individuals without easing the daily burden on ordinary Nigerians. The Federal Government has removed the subsidy and increased allocations to states, so state governments must now take responsibility for local transport. I am proposing free rides for students and a maximum fare of ₦500 for trips within major cities. Rather than purchasing new buses, states should register existing transport operators, set affordable fares and pay drivers the verified difference. To prevent fraud, payments should be linked to GPS-tracked trips and passenger tap cards. States can fund the scheme with up to five per cent of their FAAC allocations, starting with busy routes and publishing their spending for the public to see. The goal is to reduce transport costs, protect workers and students, and ensure subsidy relief reaches commuters directly.
