Kaduna Okada and Keke Riders Face Higher Demand, Greater Risks During Rains
Commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in Kaduna say the rainy season brings both higher passenger demand and greater danger on the road. Riders across Kawo, Sabon Tasha, Kakuri, Barnawa and the Central Market say rain often pushes commuters to use okada and keke services. However, flooded roads, hidden potholes, poor visibility and slippery surfaces raise the risk of crashes and vehicle damage. Operators say frequent repairs to brakes, chains, bearings and electrical parts can consume the extra income made during rainfall. Commuters have also urged riders to slow down and avoid taking risks to maximise trips. Transport unions are calling for safer riding, regular vehicle maintenance and improved road and drainage infrastructure to protect riders and passengers during the rainy season.
