Mental Health Counsellor Testifies in Lagos Child Sexual Abuse Trial
A mental health counsellor, Dr Rosemary Ogedengbe, has testified in the trial of lawyer and pastor Olawale Akanni, who is facing charges including alleged defilement, indecent treatment of a child and assault causing harm. Akanni pleaded not guilty to the amended charges. Testifying before the Ikeja High Court, Ogedengbe said children who are abused by people they trust may be too afraid to speak because of coercion and fear. She told the court that she was invited by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to provide expert opinion. Under cross-examination, Ogedengbe said she did not personally examine the alleged survivor. The defence indicated it intends to recall the survivor, while the prosecution said it would close its case. The matter was adjourned until January 13, 2027, for the defence to open its case.
