Nigeria Calls for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at UN Meeting

Nigeria has urged all nuclear-armed countries to commit to the transparent, irreversible and verifiable elimination of their nuclear arsenals. Speaking at a United Nations meeting on nuclear disarmament, Nigeria’s representative said global security should be built on dialogue, international law and multilateral cooperation, not weapons capable of catastrophic destruction. Nigeria reaffirmed that it has never pursued nuclear weapons and does not consider them necessary for its security. The country also highlighted Africa’s nuclear-weapon-free status under the Treaty of Pelindaba and supported peaceful uses of nuclear technology in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, energy and water management.
