Sources: US, Houthi Officials Held Talks in Oman on Red Sea Shipping
US officials reportedly met Houthi representatives in Oman over the weekend, according to five sources familiar with the talks. The meeting was said to have taken place at the US Embassy in Muscat with Omani mediation. The Houthi delegation reportedly told US officials it did not intend to attack American vessels and would maintain the 2025 ceasefire with Washington. Sources also said the group pledged not to target Israeli or other commercial ships, except Saudi vessels. The reported talks came as fighting with the Saudi-led coalition continued. The Houthis recently claimed control of key parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and said they had targeted Saudi military and energy facilities. Saudi authorities also accused the group of attempting to target Mecca, an allegation the Houthis denied. The US State Department did not confirm the meeting but said protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea remains a core American interest.
