Pope Leo XIV Reportedly Casts First US Election Vote by a Sitting Pontiff
Pope Leo XIV has reportedly become the first sitting pope to vote in a United States election. The American-born pontiff is said to have submitted a mail-in ballot in Chicago ahead of the November midterm elections. The Vatican said he has exercised his voting rights as a US citizen whenever eligible and believes citizens have both a right and duty to participate in democratic processes. Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, the pope holds American and Peruvian citizenship. He reportedly voted in several US primary and general elections before becoming head of the Catholic Church in May 2025.
