UK Jury Clears Husband of Manslaughter in Wife’s Suicide Case
A jury at Winchester Crown Court has found 44-year-old Christopher Trybus not guilty of manslaughter, coercive control and rape in the death of his wife, Tarryn Baird. Prosecutors alleged Trybus subjected Baird to years of physical, sexual and psychological abuse, arguing it drove her to take her own life in November 2017. The case included claims of beatings, choking and escalating controlling behaviour. Trybus denied all allegations, saying he was often abroad for work and that inconsistencies in Baird’s accounts pointed to mental health struggles and false claims. His defence maintained there was no evidence he ever harmed her. After around 40 hours of deliberation, jurors returned majority not guilty verdicts. The judge described the trial as difficult and emotional, noting how rare manslaughter charges are in cases where alleged domestic abuse leads to suicide.
