Guterres Pledges UN Support for Syria’s Recovery During Damascus Visit

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has restated the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery, reconstruction and political transition during a visit to Damascus. After meeting President Ahmed al-Sharaa and other officials, Guterres said Syria needs an inclusive, Syrian-led political process to achieve lasting peace, stability and sustainable development. He called for stronger international support for humanitarian aid and rebuilding, as millions of Syrians still face displacement and severe economic hardship. He also urged protection for all communities, accountability for violence and respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Guterres warned against further military escalation affecting Syrian territory and said renewed international engagement could support the country’s recovery.
