Court Orders Oyelakin to Stop Claiming Aree of Iree Stool
An Osun State High Court ruled on May 14, 2024, that the Aree of Iree stool remains vacant. Justice M. O. Awe barred Prince Muritala Oyelakin from parading himself as traditional ruler and restrained the governor from installing him or issuing staff of office. Despite the judgment, Oyelakin is accused of continuing to claim the throne and appoint chiefs. Prince Ali Afolabi warned that disregarding valid court orders would bring embarrassment to Iree and urged all indigenes to respect the rule of law. The Court of Appeal has set a full hearing for December 3, 2026. Afolabi seeks a declaration that Oyelakin’s emergence was null and void for defying native law and custom.
