Questions Remain Over Alleged Link Between Senator Buba and Suspected Bandit
I believe politics must not be used to dismiss serious questions about national security. Senator Shehu Buba Umar has denied allegations that he facilitated the Hajj registration of Abubakar Idris, who was reportedly arrested by the DSS in 2024 over suspected banditry and kidnapping activities. No court has found the senator guilty of any wrongdoing. The allegations deserve an impartial and transparent review because Senator Buba was Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence when the matter surfaced. Nigerians need clarity on whether the DSS investigation was concluded, what it established, and whether anyone was cleared or prosecuted. The relevant Hajj authorities should also explain how Idris was nominated, registered and sponsored through the Bauchi pilgrimage system. If the allegations are unfounded, Senator Buba should be publicly cleared. If credible evidence of wrongdoing exists, the law should take its course without political interference.
