How Juju and Hard Drugs Are Driving Nigeria to Disaster
Nigeria is rich in resources but trapped by what social scientists call the resource curse. Instead of progress, our nation is on an apocalyptic path. Many Nigerians rely on juju and hard drugs. Ritualistic beliefs and drug addiction fuel violence. The gruesome Kano killings last January exposed this deadly link when the suspect confessed he acted on a herbalist’s orders. Politicians also seek spiritual cover to win power. This erodes common sense and enables massive corruption. Looters depend on charms to escape justice while ordinary thieves rot in jail. To avoid further calamity, we must confront drug abuse and clamp down on fetishistic practices. Our future depends on tackling these root causes of crime and insecurity.
