Bosnian Serb War Crimes Convict Ratko Mladić Dies in UN Detention at 84

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, has died at the UN detention facility in The Hague at the age of 84. Mladić was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 over atrocities committed during the 1992–95 Bosnian War. His convictions included his role in the Srebrenica genocide, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed, and the siege of Sarajevo, which claimed over 10,000 lives. He spent 16 years on the run after the war before his arrest in Serbia in 2011. His life sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021. A UN court rejected his request for release in May despite his deteriorating health, ruling that he was receiving adequate medical care in detention.
