Why Tinubu Appears to Favour Influential Grassroots Politicians
I believe President Bola Tinubu values politicians with strong grassroots influence, regardless of their previous party affiliations. The restoration of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was seen by many as an example, because he was viewed as someone who had delivered substantial electoral support for the APC. I see a similar pattern in the political discussions around Osun, Kano and Rivers. Politicians such as Ademola Adeleke, Abba Yusuf and Nyesom Wike are regarded as influential figures who can mobilise voters and command support at the grassroots. The reason may be simple: elections are difficult and expensive to manipulate. Even where manipulation is alleged, the outcome can be challenged in court or lead to unrest if the opposition is strong. In my view, the safest and cheapest way to win is to have popular politicians and genuine support from voters.
