Can Abba Yusuf Retain Kano in 2027 as Gwarzo and Dalhatu Challenge Him?
Kano is shaping up to be a major battleground ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The alliances that defined the 2023 contest have shifted, setting up a fresh contest around Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo and Muhammad Bello Dalhatu. Yusuf won the 2023 election on the NNPP platform after polling 1,019,602 votes against APC candidate Nasiru Gawuna’s 890,705. His political journey also includes the tight 2019 race, when he lost to Abdullahi Ganduje by fewer than 9,000 votes after a supplementary election. The key question is whether Yusuf can retain his grassroots strength under the APC, or whether Gwarzo can draw support from the Kwankwasiyya structure. A current prediction market places Gwarzo at 55%, Yusuf at 36% and Dalhatu at 5%, but these figures are not opinion-poll results and may change as the race develops. Who do you think will win Kano in 2027?
