Why I Support VeryDarkMan’s Right to Join Nigeria’s Public Debate
I respect Femi Falana’s record, experience and place in Nigeria’s legal history. However, I disagree with the idea that professional credentials should shut grassroots voices out of national conversations. The Nigerian Bar Association and other professional bodies are important, but Nigerians do not experience injustice, insecurity and hardship only in courtrooms or offices. VeryDarkMan does not need a law degree to speak about what ordinary people are living through. His platform receives complaints, videos, testimonies and reports from citizens who often feel ignored by institutions. This does not make every allegation he raises true, and it does not make him an expert in law or security. Still, his reach and connection to everyday Nigerians should not be dismissed. Lawyers, security professionals and academics have vital roles to play. But so do traders, families affected by crime, young people facing injustice and citizens who have lost trust in public institutions. VeryDarkMan should not replace experts, but his perspective deserves to be heard alongside theirs. Law must engage with the realities people face on the streets.
