What Nigeria’s 5G Expansion Could Mean for Internet Access and Data Costs
Nigeria is preparing to expand future 5G capacity by setting aside the upper 6GHz spectrum band for mobile-network use. More spectrum could ease congestion, improve download speeds and make video calls, streaming and online payments more reliable, especially in busy cities. The benefits will depend on stronger underlying infrastructure. Fibre cuts, power shortages and network outages still disrupt service for millions of users. More spectrum can reduce congestion, but it cannot fix damaged cables or unreliable electricity. 5G access also remains uneven. Lagos, Rivers and the FCT have stronger coverage and investment than many rural and northern communities. Most mobile connections are still on 4G or 2G, while the cost of 5G-compatible smartphones remains beyond the reach of many households. For 5G to support small businesses, remote workers, online learning and digital payments nationwide, network expansion must be matched with affordable devices, fair data prices and investment outside major urban centres.
