PENGASSAN Adopts Deputy-to-President Succession Model to Curb Leadership Disputes

PENGASSAN has amended its constitution to introduce a succession model that allows an elected deputy president to automatically succeed the president. The union says the change is aimed at reducing the rivalry, factionalisation and prolonged disputes that have often surrounded leadership transitions. The model was inspired by the succession structure used by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo said the amendment was unanimously approved in August 2025 after the association reviewed models used by groups including ICAN and the Nigerian Bar Association. He said the new arrangement has helped maintain stability ahead of the union's delegates conference on August 22, 2026. Under the revised system, members will contest for the deputy president position, while the winner is expected to automatically become president at the end of the incumbent's tenure.
