Peter Obi, “Go and Verify” and the Aba Trader Analogy
I use the phrase “Aba Trader Syndrome” to describe a sales technique built around absolute confidence. A trader may promise that a product is original, durable and returnable. The bold guarantee can become part of what convinces the buyer, even before the product is properly tested. In my view, Peter Obi’s political communication often works in a similar way. His calls for people to “go and verify” project certainty and invite scrutiny. During the 2023 election cycle, that confidence helped strengthen his image as a politician who relied on facts, figures and accountability. But I believe the political environment is now changing. Critics, journalists and former supporters are increasingly asking follow-up questions about his records, policy plans and past claims. The debate is no longer only about confidence; it is about the evidence behind the confidence. For me, that is the major challenge facing Obi ahead of 2027. A strong message may win attention, but voters who have had time to examine the claims will expect clearer answers and verifiable details.
