Akpabio Gives Six State Assemblies Until November 15 to Respond on State Police
The Senate has given the Houses of Assembly in Abia, Benue, Cross River, Kano, Niger and Oyo until November 15 to state their positions on the proposed state police constitutional amendment. Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the six assemblies would be considered to have withheld approval if they do not respond by then. Thirty of Nigeria’s 36 state assemblies have already endorsed the proposal, exceeding the constitutional requirement of 24. The Senate unanimously approved giving the remaining assemblies more time. The amendment would allow state governments to establish and manage their own police services. The process also requires approval by the National Assembly and presidential assent.
