Trump Administration Declines OSCE Monitoring for US Midterm Elections
The Trump administration has declined to invite the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to observe the upcoming US midterm elections. The OSCE has monitored every US federal election since 2002. The organisation reviews areas such as election administration, voter registration, electoral maps, election laws and media coverage. US officials said the OSCE should focus its resources on elections where it can have the greatest impact. Democratic lawmakers and voting-rights advocates criticised the decision, saying it could weaken public confidence in the election process. The development comes amid reports of expanded federal election monitoring and disputes over voting rules.
