Protests Erupt in New York After ICE Officers Shoot Man During Bronx Operation
Hundreds of protesters gathered in New York after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot 28-year-old Oscar Bergal during an operation in the Bronx. Bergal was wounded in the neck, while a five-year-old child in the vehicle was not physically injured. Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticised the operation and called for ICE to be abolished. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the mayor’s remarks could fuel hostility, while defending the agency’s actions. Officials said Bergal refused orders to leave his vehicle and tried to drive away, allegedly striking ICE vehicles and putting officers at risk. Video circulating in US media appears to show plainclothes agents approaching the car before shots were fired. The incident has intensified tensions between New York City officials and the Trump administration over federal immigration enforcement.
