Influencer Imran Wakili Reportedly Arrested Over Posts Questioning APC Rally Turnout
Social media influencer Imran Usman Wakili was reportedly arrested on October 29 after posting photos and comments alleging poor attendance at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna on October 24. He also questioned why aerial footage had not been released and alleged that some images of the rally had been doctored. Sources cited by a Nigerian news outlet said security operatives went to Wakili’s home in an estate in Karu, near Abuja. They allegedly detained his younger brother and the estate manager, and towed his car over a claim that it was stolen. The two men and the vehicle were reportedly released after Wakili appeared. The sources alleged that the posts angered some individuals and that the operation was part of a wider crackdown on supporters of former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai. They also claimed Wakili was being held incommunicado and that his family had been unable to confirm his whereabouts. The allegations, including claims of political involvement, were not independently verified. Wakili had earlier said police came to his home looking for him. Police did not respond to an inquiry seeking comment.
