Can Credible Elections Restore Trust in Nigeria’s Democracy?
Nigeria’s legitimacy crisis is closely tied to weak leadership and poor governance. Credible elections can help rebuild public trust by ensuring that leaders emerge through a process citizens believe is fair. For this to happen, electoral institutions must be stronger than powerful individuals and political interests. Electoral offences such as vote buying, ballot-box snatching and the manipulation of results must attract real consequences, regardless of who is involved. Political leaders should allow electoral bodies and other relevant institutions to operate independently. Citizens also need better civic education so they can resist manipulation, follow public affairs and hold government accountable without fear.
