Nigeria Imports Arms and Ammunition Worth ₦55bn in First Half of 2026
Nigeria spent about ₦55 billion on arms and ammunition imports between January and June 2026, according to National Bureau of Statistics foreign trade data. The country imported weapons and ammunition worth ₦32.5 billion in the first quarter and ₦22.5 billion in the second quarter. The spending comes as Nigeria continues to face terrorism, violent crime and the spread of illicit firearms. Between 2020 and September 2025, Nigeria recorded about ₦827.1 billion in arms and ammunition imports. The highest annual figure in that period was ₦520 billion in 2024. Security officials have also raised concerns about illegal weapons in the country. In July 2025, the then Chief of Defence Staff said Nigeria was estimated to hold about 40 per cent of illicit arms circulating in West Africa.
