Six Ways Fuel Subsidy Helped Nigerians Keep Living Costs Down

Fuel subsidy reduced the pump price of petrol by having the government cover part of its actual cost. This helped to soften the effect of global oil prices and exchange-rate pressures on households. Cheaper petrol kept transport fares relatively lower for commuters using buses, keke, okada and ride-hailing services. It also reduced operating costs for businesses that rely on generators, including shops, eateries, salons, bakeries and small factories. Lower transport and production costs could help slow increases in food prices and other everyday goods. For low-income households, students and small business owners, the subsidy functioned as an indirect form of financial support. However, the policy also came with major fiscal costs and concerns about leakages. The key question remains whether its benefits reached ordinary Nigerians more effectively than alternative welfare measures would have.
