Anambra Government Cites 2006 Salary-Arrears Letter in Renewed Dispute With Peter Obi
The Anambra State Government has renewed its dispute with former governor Peter Obi, alleging that he left the state with outstanding debts and arrears. It challenged him to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing earlier pledges he reportedly made on public debt and prompt payment of workers. The government shared a 2006 letter concerning unpaid salaries at the Anambra State Water Corporation. The letter appealed for the workers to be paid and noted that they had last received salaries in February. However, Obi had been in office for about five weeks when the letter was dated, raising the possibility that the arrears predated his administration. The dispute follows claims by the state government that Obi left external loans, pension and gratuity arrears after his tenure ended in 2014. Obi has rejected the allegations, saying his administration cleared inherited liabilities and left no unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities or certified contractor debts. Former officials who served under Obi are expected to respond to the claims as the disagreement intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
