From Africa's Giant to Humiliated Ants: The Plight of Nigerians Abroad
Nigeria once played big brother across the continent, helping restore democracy in Benin and fighting apartheid in South Africa. Its population and economy earned it the moniker “Giant of Africa.” Yet today, Nigerians face deportation and indignity in many countries. Hundreds were recently returned from Niger, and media reports note mass expulsions in Ghana, the UK, Canada and beyond. Citizens endure harsh treatment, from forced labour to humiliating border controls. I blame leaders who have traded patriotism for self-interest. When the head is rotten, the body suffers. I have seen women forced into prostitution abroad and graduates struggling at home because their country offers no dignity. I believe we can rebuild Nigeria’s dignity. By electing true leaders and working together in unity, we can restore respect for our Giant of Africa and ensure its citizens are no longer treated like ants everywhere.
