Understanding Musical Form: How Songs Are Structured

Musical form is the overall structure of a song or composition. It shows how melodies, lyrics and sections such as verses, choruses and bridges are arranged. Many early Tin Pan Alley and Broadway songs used the 32-bar AABA form. In this structure, the A sections repeat a main melody, while the B section introduces a contrasting melody or harmony. Since the 1960s, pop and rock music have commonly used verse-chorus structures, often with repeated choruses and changing verse lyrics. Other common Western music forms include binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variations, fugue, canon and sonata-allegro. A piece that does not divide clearly into repeated sections is called through-composed, as often heard in works such as preludes, rhapsodies and symphonic poems.
