Land Ownership Should Come With Public-Interest Responsibilities

I believe land should not be treated like ordinary property. It cannot be manufactured, moved or replaced. When one person, company or government controls a huge area, that decision can limit housing, farming, access and community development for others. Buying large areas of land should require a clear development proposal and a public-interest assessment. Owners should state what the land will be used for, how the project benefits the community, and when it will be completed. Land left unused for years, or used against agreed conditions, should be reviewed and may be reclaimed. Ownership should not mean unlimited power. Communities should have a meaningful say when proposed land use could affect their peace, safety or access to services. This includes developments such as religious centres, factories and other facilities that may disrupt nearby residents. Large-scale land acquisition should mean declared use, planning approval, community input, monitoring and consequences for serious misuse or prolonged non-use.
