FG and NLC Disagree Over Timing of New Minimum Wage Talks
The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress are divided over when negotiations for a new national minimum wage should begin. Organised labour has challenged the government’s position that a fresh review of the ₦70,000 minimum wage is premature. The current wage was signed into law in July 2024. In a letter dated 13 October 2026, NLC President Joe Ajaero urged the government to begin preparations immediately. He called for nominations and the inauguration of the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee, which includes government, labour and employers. Ajaero argued that delaying the process would deepen the hardship faced by Nigerian workers.
