Utomi Reacts After Oyedele Says Some Poor Households Spend Up to 120% of Income on Food
Political economist Pat Utomi says Nigerians deserve a better standard of living after Taiwo Oyedele said a government survey found that some low-income households spend up to 120% of their income on food. Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, made the remarks during an engagement at Chatham House in London. He said families can spend more than they earn when they borrow, draw from savings or receive support from others to meet basic food needs. He also called for stronger funding for the National Bureau of Statistics, arguing that credible data is essential for policies on inflation, poverty and the working poor. Oyedele said Nigeria's low unemployment rate does not fully reflect the number of employed people who still live in poverty.
