Peter Obi Controversies: Why Evidence Must Come Before Judgment
Political controversies can raise valid questions about leadership and public accountability. They can also spread misinformation when allegations are repeated without checking the evidence. During the 2023 presidential election, a recording attributed to Peter Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo sparked debate after a reference to a “religious war” was reported. The matter raised concerns about political messaging and religious mobilisation. However, the recording’s authenticity, full context and the responses of those involved should be examined before drawing conclusions. Other viral claims about Obi, including an allegation that he bribed churches with ₦2 billion, have been found unsupported by fact-checkers. Nigerians should distinguish verified statements, disputed interpretations, unproven allegations and claims that have been debunked. Public figures deserve fair scrutiny, but criticism is strongest when it is based on reliable evidence. Accountability requires the same standard for politicians, supporters, opponents and commentators.
